A Protest March, Petitions and a Badger Book

This week has been pretty amazing. The stop the badger cull petition has now surpassed quarter of a million signatures!!!

That’s incredible when you think about it, and shows the strength of feeling amongst the general public about the hideous badger cull policy.
As people who know me are aware, I am totally against the cull of our badgers, and was one of the 2000+ people who marched in London to protest. I hang my head in despair at humanity at times, and am unable to understand a policy that goes against all the science which says a cull of badgers will not work in preventing the spread of bTB in cattle.

While I was there, I was fortunate to have listened to Dr Brian May’s speech in London. He says: ’The cull is an irreversible tragedy for our wildlife, of course; badgers have been living in family groups in the UK since long before humans arrived, and randomly slaughtering 70 per cent of them will destroy the families forever, bringing about immense suffering for these highly intelligent mammals. They are already being illegally killed in their thousands by misguided individuals seeking some kind of ‘revenge’ on these unfortunate animals, who are of course entirely innocent, their species having been infected by a long history of ineffective control of the disease in cattle. ‘

So, the cull is due to start any day (night) now, a policy which is likely to cripple rural relations for years to come. It is a tragedy for our wildlife and our natural world which is already struggling to survive. With that in mind, I wanted to write a story about it for our children. They will be the guardians of our planet in the future, and need to understand why these things happen. My book, Beatha – A Badger’s Story has been released on Amazon and a percentage of the royalties will be donated to the Badger Trust. I’m also proud to say, it’s now available in these bookstores:
